I think the difference is the idea that there are lots of mermaids, vampires, etc. But like with Bigfoot and Nessie the idea is that there’s only one of each.
yeah but not all cryptics are presented to be one of a kind, I always though people would assume in theory that there were more than one of most of them (except stuff like nessie’s case i guess since is a lake) just that someone caught on camera the one that wasn’t that good at hiding
now I wonder if this also apply to stuff like gnomes, gremlins or similar things, because technically they also should count in some way
